Volunteering In Africa – Is It All Disease & Famine?

October 26th, 2010

If you think about volunteering abroad , it’s not likely that you will be thinking about cosy comfortable bedrooms, Barbecues every night and a string of top classy hotels. If i am honest there are many places that are exactly like this all over Africa and it is not just a place for mud huts and Malaria. Volunteer projects abroad bring in a wide, diverse range of people from all four corners of the earth and this is what makes ‘voluntourism’ so popular.

Volunteering companies often realise that volunteers today do not want to camp out in the middle of the jungle for the whole of their time away. There are those however who really want to see the wild side of Africa and will sign up especially to do this. Many of you who would have been working all day teaching at a local school or working at a local orphanage or even working in a game park with the animals deserve a break at the end of the day by putting your feet up, sipping a cold beer and going to bed in a comfortable room.

What you get largely depends on where you travel to. People can participate in projects by becoming a volunteer in Zimbabwe and participate in a project of their choice. For conservation projects you will be placed in a house in the park whereas if you are a teacher you may well be staying with a host family. Africa is full of diversity and one thing that you won’t find is bare earth and rotting bed sheets unless you go looking for it!

The most important thing is the immense work that is put in by the volunteers working in Africa to help out the local communities and projects to enable them to sustain a better future. For a lot of people accommodation comes secondary and although you know that you will not be staying in the Hilton hotel it’s nice to have somewhere comfortable that you can call home.

Travel Tips For Denmark

October 24th, 2010

Consisting of the Jutland peninsula and over 400 islands, Denmark is the smallest of the Scandinavian countries.  Renowned as a land of peace and harmony, it is difficult to imagine Denmark once produced the brutal, seafaring Vikings.

Denmark offers tourists a wide variety of delightful options.  Visitors will find a wealth of charming villages and towns, castles, ring forts, and monuments.  In addition, there are sandy beaches, coves and fjords in this remarkably beautiful country.  The best time to travel to  Denmark is August, although the months of April through October will generally see nice weather and longer days.

Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, is located on the islands of Zealand and Amager.  Known as the city of copper roofs and spires, Copenhagen was founded in 1167. With its beloved Little Mermaid at the harbor entrance, this cobblestoned city is filled with old buildings, parks, gardens, fountains and squares.  You will also find the world travel famous amusement park, Tivoli.  It is open from late April to mid-September.  In addition, tourists will enjoy many superlative eateries and shopping opportunities.  There is even an inexpensive train network to help visitors get around the city.

Visitors can find a number of organized travel tours in Copenhagen.  To name just a few, there is the Vikingland Tour, which takes you to the Viking Ship Museum, and the Royal Tour, which goes to the Christianborg Palace.  Another popular tour is the famous Carlsberg brewery.

As fascinating as Copenhagen is, Denmark does offer many delights beyond its capital.  There is the biggest Viking burial ground, as well as the most extensive Renaissance buildings in Denmark, both located at Aalborg.  In addition, Århus has a collection of over sixty 17th and 18th century buildings, taken from all over the country and recreated, then set on a beautiful landscaped site.

The ‘Garden of Denmark’, Funen, is another must-see on any itinerary. Here visitors will find some of Denmark’s most delightful countryside, not to mention castles, churches and manors, all set in ancient parks and gardens.   Odense, which is the main city of Funen, was named after the Norse god Oden. It is the third largest city in Denmark and has often been called the ‘Capital of Fairytales’.  It is also the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), and every July and August, Odense has a festival to celebrate his works.  Visitors can tour his childhood home and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum.  Another recent attraction in Funen is the Naturama.  Opened in 2005, it offers tourists three levels of multimedia, natural history displays.

Visiting the Knuthenborg Park at Lolland is well worth the trip.  It is Denmark’s largest park, with well over 500 species of trees, flowers and plants, not to mention the fact that there is also a safari park.  Visitors that stop at Bornholm will find the largest castle ruin in Denmark, Hammershus, which was built in 1260.  Elsinore is another favorite stop.  The old fortress of Kronborg is located here.  Not only is it the most arresting structure in Scandinavia, but Shakespeare’s Hamlet was set here.

Canadian Sightseeing At Its Greatest – UNESCO World Heritage Sites That Impress And Intrigue

September 3rd, 2010

Taking an international vacation doesnt mean you have to take an airplane, and it doesnt mean you have to spend a whole lot of money. Ive discovered that some of the grandest vacations are right near by, and one of these vacation destinations is Canada. Canada has so much to explore, and you dont need a full passport to get there. Passport cards, cheaper, more restricted versions of passports, were created to allow travel to areas around the United States without having to purchase a complete passport. And filling out a american passport card application can be done completely online.

If you chose to vacation in Canada, you will not have to worry about understanding the people as most Canadians speak fluent English. Also, the Canadian way of life is also very similar to that of Americans so while you will have the opportunity see many spectacular sights, you will feel right at home with the people. Occupying the same continent also keeps you with like time zones so when its time to go home, you wont have to deal with jet lag. If you decide to fly, you will need a passport so remember that a rapid USA Passport renewal service is available from any of the passport agencies you will find online.

The United Nations through UNESCO has tried to insure that you dont miss a site of natural or cultural significance located in your vacation destination. They have done this by identifying World Heritage Sites and there are fifteen of these educational opportunities that can be enjoyed in Canada.

One of these sites is the Nahanni National Park Reserve. Rushing through this Reserve is the South Nahanni River, which flows past four huge canyons, eventually plummeting down in Virginia Falls, a giant waterfall twice as high as Niagara Falls. This park has sulfur hot springs, around which 100-foot-tall tufa mounds, over 10,000 years old, are located. Also in this park are complex systems of caves, which definitely warrant exploring.

One of the most unusual National Parks you will ever visit is the Dinosaur Provincial Park and is laden with dinosaur fossils. The visitor can view a selection from over five hundred excavated fossils some of which have been sent for display in museums all over the world. As we look back to the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, this national park has made a huge contribution to the worlds education and enlightenment on this subject.

A site in Canada that provides a glimpse into the history of the earliest North American inhabitants is LAnse aux Meadows. The Norse people visited this land before Christopher Columbus and their visit to Newfoundland can be chronicled in relics found in this historic area. This discovery provides deep connection concerning not only Canadian history but also the history of the entire Northern American Continent.

As you can see, traveling doesnt require buying a plane ticket and flying for hours. A cheaper passport card and a little craving for adventure can send you on the trip of a lifetime. Download your pass port card application or your rapid passport renewal because Canada is just around the corner.

Best Theme Park In Orlando

July 22nd, 2010

If you are really short on time when it comes to how much time you are spending in Florida it can be hard to choose which location to go to, so what is the best theme park. Here are just a few tips on which one you should choose if you only have one day in the Orlando area.
Families
Well if you are taking younger kids to Orlando then the first stop must always be the Mgic Kingdom park within the Disney World resort, this really is a no brainer. The great thing about this park is that they have rides for everyone within the family to enjoy which is great for the young kids. The one thing you never want to do is waste money on tickets and this is something you will not be doing when going to the Magic Kingdom.

Any of the other parks in the resport are suitable if your kids are a little bit older so make sure you realise this. Just so you are aware these include Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood
Studios and of course the Animal Kingdom.
Adults
Universal Studios, SeaWorld or of course Busch Gardens are usually the parks that actually appeal the older audiences but this does not mean that Disney would not appeal to you, Disney is a place that really does appeal to everyone. These are better for the adults because the rides are more orientated for them. They have more rollercoasters, more hardcore rides and more places to drink out at
night. Downtown Disney is not a place to be ruled out as it has great places to hang out!

So there you have it, if you are in Orlando for a day it really depends on how old you are on what kind of park you go too.

For more information on Florida check out top Florida guide and Magic Kingdom information along with a Walt Disney World Guide.
