The application for a second runway at Stansted airport has been withdrawn by the British Airports Authority (BAA) after an eight year battle with anti-expansion campaigners.
The new British government have made it clear that they will not back the proposed Stansted airport expanion and they will also withdraw the provision for assisted relocation within the homeowner support scheme. This latest development comes shortly after plans to expand Heathrow airport were scrapped.
David Johnston, Stansted Airports managing director, has stated that he and his staff will be working hard to bring new business to the airport. They are committed to working closely with the local community to provide employment opportunities as well as potential for increased business and travel. He believes that the South East of England needs greater airport capacity in order to strengthen the UKs international trading links.
The Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) campaign group have said that they think the fight is far from over. Their focus is now clearly on the future and the soon to be published (2011) Government white paper on aviation. While they are pleased with this latest victory their sights are clearly set on ensuring that there will never be an additional runway at Stansted airport.
SSE wants to be certain that the local community is fully aware of the importance of the forthcoming National Policy Statement. The ongoing campaign is intended to raise awareness in the local community, encouraging as many people as possible to respond to the 2011 public consultation. As part of the build up to this the Never again theme will feature prominently in a new poster campaign.
SSE will elicit support from various local authorities in the Stansted region . They will also be seeking support from local members of parliament (MPs).
This is the fourth time that a proposed second runway at Stansted has been blocked in fifty years. Campaigners now feel that they have earned the right to a further fifty years of peace.
