Acquiring An Emergency Pass Port Replacement

There are plenty of times when you could need to obtain a new passport at short notice. Your old one may have become lost or stolen. Maybe it has expired and then, out of the blue, you have a family or business emergency. When this hapassportens, you need to obtain an emergency passport replacement.

Report Lost Passport

A stolen or lost passport is required to be immediately reported. If you are within the United States of America, you may report it over the phone to the State Department, who has a toll-free telephone number for this purpose. If you are in a foreign country, you must contact the local American Embassy or Consulate. After you have made the telephone call, you must then complete and sign a Form DS-64, Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport. This form may be downloaded from the US Government website, from a passport agency or from an Acceptance Facility.

Formal Papers

Form D-64 has to be completed using black ink and it must be legible. Answer every question as accurately and completely as you can. If you are later found to have given false information, you may be fined sent to prison. A different form is needed for a passport renewal application.

Apassportlication

After you complete the form DS-64, the next thing you need to do is to fill in Form DS-11, Application for a United States Passport. This may be obtained over the Internet, from an Acceptance Facility or from a passport Agency. You will need to answer some basic questions, fill in your contact details, the names of your parents and simple information about what you look like. You will need to answer questions about what country you intend to visit, any previous names by which you may have been known in the past, whether you have had a previous passport. You will also be asked to provide emergency contact details.

Passport Agency

Do not sign Form DS-11 until you have been requested to do so by an Acceptance agent. This form cannot be sent in the mail but must be submitted in person to a passport agency or Acceptance facility. If you need to travel abroad within 2 weeks or if you need the replacement within 4 weeks in order to secure a visa from another country, you may make an apassportointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency.

Completed Forms

As well as the DS-11 form, you must bring proof of American citizenship. This can be in the form of a consular report of birth overseas, proof of naturalization or a certified copy of your birth certificate. This will bear a multicolored, raised or embossed seal as well as the signature of the Registrar.

Identification

There are other pieces of documentation you will need to take with you when you go to the Regional Agency. These are a passport photograph, the relevant fee and proof of identification. Your ID may be a valid driver’s license, a government ID, naturalization certificate, military ID or a previously issued passport that has not been damaged. You should also bring a photocopy of your Proof of ID.

Getting an emergency American passport replacement is reasonably simple. It is reassuring to know that this can be done very quickly. Once you have your new passport, it is a very good idea to take a photocopy, or at least write down the number and keep it in a safe place, just in case you need it again. Sometimes all you need is a US online passport renewal application.
